An Update on the Logan Square Dog Park

Logan Square has become a really terrific neighborhood over the past few years. It seems like a new restaurant, bar, or boutique opens up every other day along Milwaukee Ave. New construction has brought beautiful condo buildings to the area, and the weekly farmers’ market on Logan Blvd has made the neighborhood a destination for residents in other parts of the city.

While Logan Square has certainly increased in popularity amongst Chicagoans and their four-legged friends, there’s one thing the neighborhood is missing that would make it an even better place to live and visit – a dog park. Luckily, Logan Square will be opening a dog-friendly area in less than a week. In case you haven’t seen it, the brand new Logan Square Dog Park is tucked behind a Kennedy Expressway wall between Artesian Ave and Western Ave. We couldn’t be happier to welcome the highly anticipated dog-friendly area to the neighborhood!

Because it seems like the planning and construction for the Logan Square Dog Park has been going on forever, we thought we’d share a little bit of what has happened over the past year and as well as what we know about the future.

May 1, 2014 At a public meeting held at the Haas Park Fieldhouse, the Chicago Park District unveiled its plans to begin construction on the Logan Square Dog Park in the fall.

August 16, 2014 The Logan Square Dog Park Committee holds its fourth annual dog-friendly “Pints for Pups” fundraiser at El Cid in Logan Square.

September 11, 2014 A city permit was issued laying the groundwork to build a new structure from the ground up.

October 4, 2014 The Logan Square Dog Park Committee invites volunteers to bring brooms, rakes, and shovels to help clean up the future dog park site.

April 14, 2015 Friedler Construction provides a winning construction bid of about $293,000, allowing plans for the Logan Square Dog Park to move forward.

May 1, 2015 After several years of planning and fundraising, construction finally begins on the Logan Square Dog Park.

June 10, 2015 The construction fence is up and concrete forms are being installed at the future site of the Logan Square Dog Park.

July 28, 2015 The Logan Square Dog Park Committee announces its “Party in the Park” event to celebrate the wonderful addition to the neighborhood.

August 2, 2015 The gravel is in, the asphalt is being painted, and the benches have been installed. However, the park is still an active construction site and isn’t yet open to the public.

The Logan Square Dog Park’s “Party in the Park” event is scheduled for August 30, 2015 from 2pm – 6pm. There will be food trucks, vendors, music, and dog-friendly fun. Will you attend?
